about

I am an artist and curator. My work is focused upon painting, installations, sound and video art, music composition and recording. My painting practice is  informed by past styles and historical techniques. The influence of Baroque art and 20th-century modernism is reflected in my treatment of contemporary subject matter, which ranges from environmental issues to the politics of image-making and dissemination through digital media.

In my painting and drawing practice I work principally with oils, watercolours, graphite, silverpoint, pastels and mixed media on paper. I produce works in series in order to explore my subjects from multiple perspectives. In my work I draw upon historic styles and past modes of representation as a means of presenting and interpreting contemporary subject matter. This impulse stems, in part, from a belief in the sustainability of old styles. The visual references in my paintings and drawings are equally informed by my background in the field of art history.

My audio work is inspired by early 20th- century musique concrete and sound art, as well as more contemporary pop and rock. Recordings vary between experimental audio and album-oriented compositions.

In recent years, I have taken an interest in site-specific installations and community-based projects. These have included painting installations and video projection projects in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, where I live and work.
